Day of Knowledge in Russia

September 1 in Russia is traditionally marked as the Day of Knowledge. Officially this holiday was established on October 1, 1980.<br />September 1 is the beginning of the new school year for pupils, students, teachers and lecturers. Traditionally on this day schools hold festive lineups. First grade pupils receive a warm welcome at schools. <br />According to the Russian Education Ministry, 1.431 million children will become first grade pupils in Russian schools in 2010. A total of 12.8 million children will study in Russian schools, some 150,000 less than last year.
