The Ukrainian opposition is trying to destabilize the situation in the country, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said on Tuesday.

Some 3,000 protestors are currently gathered near the parliamentary building, police said. They are demonstrating against a rise in utility charges and a proposed increase in the pension age.

"The so-called opposition is again attempting to destabilize the situation in the country," Azarov said.

He also said that President Viktor Yanukovych had stabilized both the economic and political situation in the former Soviet republic since his election victory earlier this year.

The demonstration is taking place on the opening day of parliament's autumn session. Police and supporters of the ruling Party of Regions have so far prevented the opposition demonstrators from taking their protest to the front of the parliamentary building.
