* Three people are confirmed dead after a cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off Italy, the prefect of the nearby city of Grosseto, Giuseppe Linardi

* Rauf Denktash, the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has died at the age of 87, Cypriot state TV has reported

* President Hugo Chavez has ordered the closure of Venezuelan consulate in Miami following a diplomatic scandal involving Venezuelan Consul General Livia Acosta Noguera

*At least 12 people were killed and other four were injured in a crowding during a religious gathering in India in the early hours of Saturday, local media said referring to officials.

* A bomb killed at least 30 and injured 90 Shiite pilgrims near the southern port city of Basra on Saturday, world media reported referring to Iraqi officials.

* The first-ever Winter Youth Olympic Games opened on January 13 in Innsbruck, Austria.

* At least six people were killed including two police officers during the militant attack of the police station in the north west of Pakistan, DawnNews reported

RUSSIA

* Japanese Foreign Minister has reviewed the disputed Kuril Islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan, from aboard a patrol boat, as well as from Hokkaido Island, Kyodo news agency reported

* About 350 people participated on Saturday in a rally organized by Yabloko party on Chistye Prudy in Moscow; a party member and the organizer of the event, Maiya Zavialova, was detained by the police for exceeding the agreed number of participants, a spokesperson for the Moscow police said.
